Veterans Day 2014

Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11th, and Reno is doing its part to celebrate our veterans and to have some fun!

Idelwood Park will be hosting the Inaugural Veterans Day Run in Reno. The race will feature two options: a 5K run and a 1-mile walk/run for families and supporters. The 5K will begin at 4:11 p.m. with the 1-mile race beginning immediately after. The 5K will be professionally timed. Tickets are available on the Veterans Day Run website, and when purchasing your ticket you will be given the opportunity to make a donation to Operation Gratitude. This organization’s purpose is to “lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military.” Operation Gratitude sends over 100,000 care packages each year filled with snacks, entertainment, and letters of support to Veterans, new recruits, first responders, wounded warriors, care givers, and U.S. Service members deployed oversees. Making a small donation along with your race registration fee will be a huge help to this organization. After the race, all runners and walkers will receive a commemorative finishers pin, either a 5K finisher’s medal or a 1-mile finisher’s ribbon, a finisher’s certificate and finish-line refreshments. Participants also have the opportunity to purchase race T-shirts. Veterans and Active Duty Military Members will receive discounts on registration prices. For a schedule of race events, registration pricing, and more information check out the Veterans Day Race website.

The City of Reno will hold its annual Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. on November 11. The parade will begin at the historic Virginia Street Bridge and will end at the Fifth Street intersection. The theme of the parade, following Nevada’s big birthday, is “150 Years of Liberty Through Service”. The Grand Marshall is Army veteran Major John Riggs, who graduated from Reno High School in 1964. There are 75 entries to the parade this year, including local veterans associations and high school bands. Mayor Bob Cashell is also scheduled to speak at the beginning of the parade. Come out to Virginia Street Bridge on Tuesday to support our Veterans!

The Colin Ross Senior Music Program will be presenting a concert on Veterans Day and offering a workshop on Tuesday evening at the Neil Road Recreation center (at 3925 Neil Road). Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the concert and workshop will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Admission is free for every Veteran (with a VA card) and a guest, and $5 for non-veteran participants. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done by calling 334-2262.

Wanda Sykes to Wake Up Reno with Comedy at Silver Legacy

Wanda SykesAfter multiple Emmy Awards and Comedy Central specials, comedienne Wanda Sykes is still one of the funniest sidekicks and stand up acts in the country.  From writing for other famous comedians to doing her own headline tours, Wanda Sykes ranks among Entertainment Weekly’s “25 Funniest People in America.”  See her live at Silver Legacy Resort Casino on Saturday, March 5in the Grande Exposition Hall at 8 p.m.

Growing up, Sykes didn’t necessarily know she wanted to do comedy.  She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and raised in Maryland, later attending Hampton University and receiving a Bachelor of Science degree.  After college she was prompted to use her smart-witted attitude for something more—stand up comedy.

After success at a talent showcase in Washington, D.C. Sykes began spending more time on the stage.  Soon after, outspoken stand up comedian Chris Rock discovered her talents and recruited her to write for HBO’s critically acclaimed “Chris Rock Show.”  As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmy’s and in 1999 won the Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.”

From there, Sykes career skyrocketed to the top.  In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for “Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic.” She won three more Emmy’s in 2002, 2004 and 2005 for her work on “Inside the NFL” for “Outstanding Weekly Studio Show.”  In 2003 she was seen on Fox’s “Wanda at Large” which she wrote, produced and starred in.  She also put together a one hour Comedy Central special called “Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied”.  Her first HBO Comedy Special “Wanda Sykes: Sick & Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy.

Sykes can also be seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda and heard in the animated feature “Over The Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures. She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show “Wanda Does It” where she tried various non-showbiz jobs. Her first book titled “Yeah, I Said It” hit bookstores in September 2004.  She can be seen on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

During her routines Sykes attacks topics like politics, gay marriage, karma, healthcare, racial profiling, the pressures of being a woman and the perks of getting older with smart, savvy wit audiences can’t help but laugh at.

See this Emmy winning comedienne up close and personal at Silver Legacy on Saturday, March 5 at 8 p.m. inside the Grande Exposition Hall!  Tickets are available now for $50 with premium seating for $67.50.  To reserve seats call 1-800-MUST-SEE (678-8733) or 775-325-7401 or visit www.silverlegacy.com and www.ticketmaster.com.  iPhone, iPad and Android users, download the free Silver Legacy App to get tickets instantly and check out Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for the latest Legacy news.  It’s Wanda Sykes in a show you don’t want to miss!

Fall leavesCan you believe 2011 is only seven weeks away?! Where has 2010 gone? Each year I find myself asking the same question. I’m sure  it doesn’t help that in Reno Tahoe there are at least 260 days of special events each year – helping the year just whiz by.

KhanDonate your gizzard: If waiting in ungodly long lines before the sun rises the day after Thanksgiving isn’t your thing, pack up the family and head north to the Animal Ark to see Mother Nature in all her natural glory. Plus, if you have any raw turkey necks and gizzards left over from your holiday meal, the critters at the Ark will be very grateful for the donation. Check out the coyotes and bobcats as they put on their gorgeous winter coats and witness as the bears prepare for their long winter hibernation.

Tap into your creative side: Let’s be honest. For some of us, the day after Thanksgiving is meant to be a day of recovery. Rather than stay at home tempted by the lure of leftovers, why not explore Reno’s arts and culture? There is less than one week remaining to check out Pablo Picasso’s Musical Instruments exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art. Or jump right into the next holiday with the Eldorado Hotel Casino’s newest musical production – Christmas on Broadway.  Shop for unique gifts at John Ascuaga’s Nugget and Williams LTD ”Crafts for Christmas event November 26-28 at the Nugget’s Rose Ballroom. The event is free and will feature more than 100 Christmas craft and gift booths.  Had enough arts? Watch the Nevada Wolfpack as they take on Boise St, or catch the Reno Bighorns in action against Bakersfield. The leftovers will always be there, these exhibits and sporting events won’t.

Snow BranchLet is snow, let is snow! This weekend the daytime highs in Reno are falling into the mid-30s and the National Weather Service is calling for a 70% chance of snow Saturday and Sunday! Skiers and boarders across Reno Tahoe will be donning a permagrin in anticipation. A handful of ski resorts are preparing to open for the 2010-2011 season! Spunky, Adventurous Songs from Sara Evans at Silver Legacy

Sara EvansDescribed as strong, versatile and spunky, Sara Evans plans to present her latest “Greatest Hits” album to fans at Silver Legacy Resort Casino on Friday, November 12.  The country singer takes the stage in the Grande Exposition Hall at 8 p.m. with chart toppers like “A Real Fine Place to Start, “Suds in the Bucket” and “No Place That Far.”

A Booneville, Missouri native, Sara Evans grew up one of seven children and began singing country music with her family’s band when she was five-years-old. By the time she was 16 she landed a gig singing regularly at a club in Columbia, Missouri. Evans made her way to Nashville where she got her first break.  Legendary songwriter Harlan Howard heard her amazing voice and tapped her to sing his demos. A deal with RCA Records followed soon after.

With numerous Number 1 hits, Evans has become one of the most successful female artists of her generation.  She’s won numerous accolades, among them the Academy of Country Music’s Female Vocalist of the Year and the Country Music Association’s Video of the Year for “Born to Fly.”  She was named 2006 Female Vocalist of the Year in the R&R Reader’s Poll and has been celebrated as one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.”

Of the five albums Evans has released, her sophomore set, “No Place That Far” has been certified Gold; 2001’s “Born to Fly” is Double-Platinum and 2003’s “Restless” and 2005’s “Real Fine Place” are both Platinum.  Those successes have now brought on a new album, “Sara Evans—Greatest Hits,” a 14-song collection featuring 10 of Evans’ signature songs as well as four inspired new songs.

It’s the ability to write songs that connect with the heart of her audience that has made Evans such a successful artist, and it’s her willingness to take risks and embrace a challenge that has widened her following. “Some things just feel right,” she says, citing her participation in ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” “It totally, totally changed my career. It was one of the best times of my life. I loved it.”

Get your tickets to see this multi-talented, multi-faceted country singing superstar in person at Silver Legacy Resort Casino on Friday, November 12 at 8 p.m.   Tickets are available from $35 with premium seating at $55.  For more information or to reserve your seats visit www.silverlegacy.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
