Shop Local This Holiday Season!

melting pot

The holiday season is always full of shopping, and Reno-Sparks is urging you to support locally owned businesses this winter. Saturday, November 29 (the day after Black Friday) was American Express Small Business Saturday, but we hope to continue this movement all season long! To make things easier on you, we have compiled a short list of locally owned businesses that would love to be a part of your holiday shopping! This is not an all-inclusive list, but the City of Reno has a map of many more of our local businesses, and the Buy Local movement has a list of local businesses in town.

For locally owned Reno gear, visit Reno Envy in downtown. From T-shirts to key chains to mugs to hats, Reno Envy has all your Reno-related gifts. Their logo, a simple trailer, was meant to be a parody of the John Deere logo that consumers loved enough to make it permanent. Their playful spirit and understanding of Reno’s culture makes them the perfect retail representative for our city. If you venture into Reno’s up-and-coming Midtown District you’ll find Junkee Clothing Exchange, a store filled with recycled clothing, accessories, antiques, and furniture that you won’t find anywhere else. Their funky, retro vibe combined with a heightened understanding of current fashion makes Junkee the perfect place to find a new unique piece that is totally you. Also in Midtown is The Melting Pot World Emporium. This store isn’t your typical retail spot; it’s Reno’s main place for Burning Man preparation. Filled with Steampunk accessories like goggles and belts, and clothing designed with Reno’s counterculture in mind, The Melting Pot is a great place to shop for your not-so-typical holiday list items. Bigtruck Brand in Lake Tahoe is a local “American cut and sew head wear supplier”. Their products have gained to support of various celebrities and professional athletes and are the perfect gift for any hat-wearing, Tahoe-loving person on your holiday shopping list. For avid skiiers, Sparks is home to a Moment Skis shop. These high-quality skis are handmade in Sparks and are popular among local (and national) ski fanatics.

Happy Happy Joy Joy is Reno’s local toy shop for people of every age. They have a wide variety of classic and collectible toys, retro games, and independent books. The store is all about fun, so head there to add some fun to your holidays! Sundance Books and Music is located in the historic Levy Mansion and has books and music to fit everybody’s tastes. They have hundreds of new and used books and music (CDs and Vinyl), as well as DVDs, magazines, journal and other gifts. To make things super easy, Sundance has created a Holiday Gift Guide to help you with your shopping.

If you’re looking to please a foodie, Big Horn Olive Oil Company is a great place to go. They carry ultra-premium, certified Olive Oils and Balsamic Vinegars that are absolutely delicious. Whispering Vine is the spot for a bottle (or two) of wine for those big holiday dinners and parties. They have well-known crowd pleasers, as well as unique small-batch wines that you wouldn’t expect to find here. They carry wines from all over the world, in tons of varietals, and are always more than happy to help you find something delicious that fits your needs. Whispering Vine also has a holiday guide on their website to finding the perfect wine for your special occasion. For the sweet tooth visit Dorinda’s Chocolates for a plethora of chocolates, caramels, cookies, and more to satisfy every dessert craving this holiday season.

Burning Man Style Guide – Prepping for the Playa

Burning Man is the perfect place to show your true self. If you want to wear combat boots with a pink tutu- rock it! The playa requires a dress code of fun, funky, and downright exotically fabulous . Check out PHOTOS from previous years to get costume ideas, and hit up these local shops for affordable vintage, recycled, custom and one-of-a-kind clothing to complete your Burning Man ensemble. From dresses to jumpsuits, from faux fur coats to masks, these places have it all for you to be the most stylish – and YOU – on the playa.  Don’t forget, it’s going to be hot, hot, hot, during the day – so plan accordingly! P1780265

Here are a few stores top stores in the Reno Tahoe area to complete your Burning Man experience:

Junkees Clothing Exchange – 960 South Virginia St. – 775-322-5868

The Melting Pot World Emporium – 1049 South Virginia Street – 775-322-9445

Polyesther’s Costume Boutique – 655 South Virginia Street -  775-420-5050

Menagerie Costumes – 1999 South Virginia Street, #B -  775-322-5427

Prism Magic Clothing & Imports – 2161 Pyramid Way  – 775-356-5577

No matter what Burning Man look you decide, here are some essentials you’ll want to add to your costume:

-          Lights: A flashlight is helpful, but you need more than that to be seen at night. Wear glow sticks, flashing lights, EL wire, head lamps…  Anything and everything glowing!

-          Goggles: Essential for keeping the dust and dirt out of your eyes!

-          Shoes: Going bare-foot may seem like a good idea… I mean, you’re channeling your inner nature, focusing on self-expression, right? Unfortunately, going without shoes results in what is known as “Playa Foot”- a painful drying, cracking rash caused by prolonged contact with the alkali lake bed. Burning Man suggests bringing rubber Birkenstock clogs or boots that won’t get trashed by the alkali.

-          A broad brimmed hat with a cord: You’ll no doubt need a head covering… and having a hat with a cord will keep it on your head during gusts of wind.

*Also, don’t forget to leave out those decorations and costume items behind, keeping in mind the Leave No Trace mantra.. Feathered beaus may seem like a cool idea, but when you’re spending all your time picking up all the feathers you shed, you may want to reconsider.

Happy Burn!

Cowboy up for the Reno Rodeo

Headed to the Reno Rodeo and don’t have anything to wear? (You don’t want to look like a city slicker, even if you are one!) Or just looking for western apparel providers in Reno, Nevada? Well, you’re in luck because this western city has you covered head to toe.  In addition to on-site vendors at the rodeo grounds, there are a slew of western supply stores here in the Reno Tahoe area which are ready to get you clothed up like a cowboy or garbed up like a cowgirl.

2633261180_55578596d3_oProper attire for the rodeo is crucial to the event! Selfie taking opportunities will not present themselves if you get here to find out you’ve left your snazzy cattle boots, rugged jeans and rustic plaid shirts at home. So if you fall into that category, or just want to pick up some cowboy/girl appropriate attire, these stores will be able to help out.

If you are searching the horizon for a more urban cowboy look, and quite possibly this is your first time visiting the Reno Rodeo, stroll on over to Cabelas located at 8650 Boomtown Road in Verdi (just outside Reno) Nevada.  Pick up some delicious caramel popcorn while you traverse the open fields of apparel and hunting supplies as you play animal bingo with the various taxidermy exhibits.  You are sure to find your rodeo gear, and another reason to come back to Reno. For more information visit Cabelas.com or call (775) 829-4100.

If you’re the seasoned Rodeo visitor and are looking for something more custom fitted, you should journey on over to D Bar M Western Store located at 1020 E 4th Street.  D Bar M titles itself as “A real western store for real cowboys” but if you are a first time cowboy the staff will be able to help you navigate through the overwhelming array of American made boots and country appeal.  For more information about D Bar M Visit dbarm.com or call (775) 329-9107.

3216926752_fb44e8f3da_oIf you are on a budget and want the modern cowboy look, trail on down to Boot Barn Located at 3345 Kietzke ln.  Boot Barn would definitely have the necessary clothing lines to deck out you or your whole family with their wide selection of dressy casual and modern rugged rancher looks.  For more information visit bootbarn.com or call (775) 825-0666.

If you are in a hurry, or find yourself wrongly dressed, ride on down to Rogers’s Cowboy Supplies. From June 19th to 28th Rogers will be at the southeast corner of the Reno Livestock Events Center (on site for the Rodeo), or normally find them at 2252 Oddie Blvd in Sparks.  Rogers offers a wide array of anything western! And if that isn’t a reason enough to check it out, family patriarch Garry Roger and his brothers have been Indian World Champion Team Ropers.  For more information visit rogerscowboysypply.com or call (775) 358-2100

There’s no incentive to prepare your outfit at home for the Reno Rodeo with this array of country supply stores.

Reno Tahoe USA APP

“There are so many choices for entertainment, special events, outdoor adventure and relaxation in Reno, Sparks and North Lake Tahoe that it can be difficult for visitors to narrow down their options before they get here,” said RSCVA President and CEO Christopher Baum. “More and more visitors are relying on mobile technology to point them in the right direction for information on their passions at any given moment, and the new Reno Tahoe USA app provides visitors with more information, and more control, of their overall travel experience.”

The Reno Tahoe USA app provides potential visitors with information on which hotels may be best suited to their needs; what concerts, events and entertainment will be offered during their visit; where they can get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air, ski resorts and golf courses; as well as where they might find a great restaurant, a world-class spa or unique shopping throughout the destination. Once visitors are here, the app uses their location to help them find activities of interest within walking distance. The app also provides easy access to a variety of coupons, deals and discounts offered by dozens of local businesses.

In support of the popular “buy local” campaigns being launched in destinations across the country, the RSCVA worked with Reno-based KPS3 Marketing to develop the Reno Tahoe USA app, which it designed to maximize, and to simplify, the number of options presented to visitors.

“Travelers have come to depend on their phone for guidance in new destinations,” said KPS3 Vice President of Creative and Technical Services Rob Gaedtke. “This application puts visitors in control of that experience and allows the RSCVA to share the myriad offerings found in the Reno Tahoe area.”

The RSCVA and its partners are also making the new Reno Tahoe USA app more than just a source of information. One new user of the Reno Tahoe USA app will be given a three-day, two-night stay, at their choice of the Eldorado Hotel Casino or Silver Legacy Resort Casino, each month through October 2013.

The Reno Tahoe USA app can be downloaded at the iPhone Mobile App Store, the Android Google Play Store or at www.VisitRenoTahoe.com/mobile.
