2014 Barracuda Championship Highlights

barracuda championshipThe face of the Barracuda Championship (formerly Reno-Tahoe Open) was made-over just in time for its highly-anticipated 16th year; the annual Reno Tahoe tournament is now named the Barracuda Championship, based off its new title sponsor, Barracuda Networks. Although the name of the game may have changed, the tournament’s esteemed reputation remains as a favorite stop on the PGA Tour for golfers and spectators alike… With a course surrounded by Reno Tahoe’s spectacular snow-capped mountains and sky-high pine trees, how could it not? Better yet, this year’s Barracuda Championship promises to be bigger, better, and more lively than ever due to the wide variety of new on-site activities for spectators to enjoy; with the Mirassou Wine Walk, the Food Truck Stop, the Kids’ Tree House and more, this year is sure to be a hole-in-one for the whole family.

HIGHLIGHTS:

When: July 28- August 03

Venue: Jack Nicklaus-designed Montrêux Golf and Country Club (par 72, 7,472 yards). Montrêux is the third longest course on the PGA Tour and it has also rated the 6th most difficult course among all PGA Tour events.

Purse: $3 million (first place, $540,000) and 300 FedEx cup points

Scoring: Modified Stableford scoring- The Barracuda Championship boasts the opportunity to be the only event on the entire PGA Tour to play with this format. Rather than counting the total number of strokes taken as in typical stroke play golf, Modified Stableford involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. This exciting format encourages the professionals to shoot for the pin every time which creates more excitement for spectators.

Tickets: Season pass (week-long ticket) is $65. Daily tickets are $20. Children 15-under are free with an accompanying adult.

Media: Live Television Coverage will be on The Golf Channel

PLAYERS:

The Barracuda Championship welcomes 132 PGA Tour Professional golfers to Reno Tahoe.

121212Since its start in 1999, the Barracuda Championship has been host to a number of PGA stars, including Gary Woodland, Jonathan Byrd, J.J. Henry, and more.  Displaying incredible playing ability year to year, including a record-breaking low round of 61 for 2011 champion Scott Piercy, and an unprecedented feat on a pair of par 3s by acing two holes in the same round in 2006 by Yusaku Miyazato, all of these athletes have brought excitement to the grounds of Montrêux. This year, the Barracuda Championship is excited to announce that top-ranked amateur golfer, Patrick Rodgers, who recently finished a record career at Stanford University, will start what is sure to be a prosperous professional career at the event. Jason Allred, coming off a top 15 finish at the Memorial Tournament, will also be in attendance.  Lasly, a fan favorite, John Daly, will be there as well! A complete list of all the players can be found here!

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Women’s Day: The Barracuda Championship brings back Ladies day this year on July 27. Much more than simply a ladies golf outing, Women’s Day presented by Barrick Gold invites all women, from avid golfers to amateurs, to enjoy a “tee”-rific day on the green. Welcome back Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk, the 7-time Canadian Women’s Long Drive Champion, as she gives advice and tips to fellow lady golfers and entertains with an interactive golf demonstration. Enjoy all aspects of this exciting event including a fashion show featuring “bigs” and “little’s” from Reno Tahoe’s own Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada, a special introduction to Women’s Health by KTVN’s Wendy Damonte, and a chance to tee up with a ball of yarn from Jimmy Beans Wool for a long-drive contest!

Pro-Am Golf Event: The Pro-Am allows you and your guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play alongside a PGA Tour professional at the beautiful Montrêux Golf and Country Club. Tee times and groupings are decided upon at the Tuesday evening Pairings Party the night prior at the Eldorado Hotel Resort, featuring hosted food and beverage in an elegant setting while you play a “Deal or No Deal” game to learn who your PGA Tour professional teammate will be the following day. Each participant receives a valuable gift package and a commemorative photograph with the Pro in your group.

Patriot’s Luncheon 2014: The Barracuda Championship salutes the troops in a very special way with the 5th annual Patriots’ Luncheon featuring the K9s For Warriors program and benefiting the Veterans Guest House.  Come out July 29 from 11:30 am until 1 p.m. for a visiting soldier’s story about war, post traumatic stress disorder and the rescue dog that helps him each and every day, where you will no doubt be inspired and moved while benefiting an amazing cause.

PGA TOUR: Legends Reno-Tahoe Open tees off

RENT-07 Print-3cx5-1Exciting PGA TOUR action returns to northern Nevada with the 11th annual Legends at Sparks Marina Reno-Tahoe Open, playing through Aug. 9 at Montrêux Golf & Country Club.

As the PGA TOUR’s only summer West Coast stop, the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open offers fans a fun-filled week of low-scoring professional golf along with the return of many of the tournament’s most popular events including “Fiesta Loco,” “Kidz Par-Tee Zone,” Vino 100 Wine Walk, as well as the charity events “Renown Get Fit Fore Charity” and “Birdies for Charity.”

The 16th hole is once again home to “Fiesta Loco,” a fiesta-themed hospitality area featuring margaritas, a taco and burrito bar and the fan-favorite Mariachi Band. Also back for a fourth consecutive year is the “Vino 100 Wine Walk” beginning each day at 9 a.m. with mimosas at the driving range and inviting spectators and wine enthusiasts to walk the course and enjoy a wine tasting along the way. The “Kidz Par-Tee Zone” also makes its return to entertain the junior fans Friday through Sunday with a play area including a putting green, bounce houses, face painting and more.

While the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open is committed to helping the community in which it plays year-round, tournament time brings two charity events that encourage attendees to join along in the spirit of giving, “Get Fit Fore Charity,” and “Birdies for Charity.”

The “Renown Get Fit Fore Charity” walk is a course-long pedometer walk through Montrêux’s beautiful tree-lined fairways. With a $5 donation, each participant receives a pedometer and a chance to win a prize based on the number of steps taken along the course. “Birdies for Charity” is another way to follow the action and compete among friends while helping a worthy cause as participants are tempted to donate anywhere from 10 cents to $10 or more for each birdie carded during the tournament with the closest guess taking home a prize. Proceeds from both charity events benefit local non-profit organizations.

PGA ‘legends’ to play Reno-Tahoe Open

For one week a year, some of the best golfers in the game stream into Reno Tahoe, seeking birdies, avoiding bogies and playing on one of the best golf courses in the West.

The Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, a PGA TOUR stop at Montreux Golf and Country Club (Aug. 3-9) in south Reno, offers a unique setting among the pines of the Tahoe forest (just minutes from Lake Tahoe) but is also right at the tree line with the Nevada desert on display in the valley below.

And although the LRTO offers a true PGA experience, this isn’t your father’s – or even grandfather’s – golf tourney. Spectators come out for the laid-back party atmosphere. It’s serious golf without the serious attitudes.

Take the Fiesta Loco-themed hole at #16. Here the margaritas and tequila drinks will be flowing, along with a burrito and taco bar. Oh, and there is also a Mariachi band. What would a PGA TOUR event be without a Mariachi band?

And of course there is plenty of fun for the kids. The Kidz Par Tee Zone offers a bounce house, face painting, putt-putt golf and more. This may be the only tournament where the cheers of the gallery have to compete with the sound of squealing kids having a blast.

If you are a wine lover, the Vino 100 Wine Walk offers the opportunity to enjoy all of the golf action while sampling wines at various tasting stations throughout the course. What could be better than a sunny day, high-level pro golf and wine tasting all at the same time?

On top of it all, the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open is an open invitation to have a great time viewing the game that we all love. Beyond the unique events and attractions – and of course competitive golf (players are competing for a $3 million purse as well as all-important FedExCup points), tickets are reasonable, and transportation from Reno Tahoe hotels is fast and easy.

For more information, visit the LRTO page at VisitRenoTahoe.com.
