New Plans for JA Nugget in Sparks

The international architecture and design firm Cuningham Group Architecture Inc. has been selected to assist in the redesign of John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nevada.

NuggetGamingFloorCuningham Group put together a comprehensive design plan for the Nugget that reflects the resort’s strategy to reinvigorate and reposition the property as THE place to go in Northern Nevada. The design will feature upgraded finishes, colors and lighting to evoke a sense of fun, excitement and energy.

The renovations will feature new experiences in  food and beverage, entertainment, gaming and rooms offerings intended to honor traditional Nugget values while generally broadening their appeal.  The Nugget’s new owners plan to invest up to $50 million dollars into the property in the coming years to update and renovate the Nugget’s casino floor, hotel rooms, restaurant concepts and entertainment venues.

Fans of laid-back, all-stops-out, down-country good times will have a new place to party when the Sparks Nugget casino resort debuts Gilley’s Reno Sparks later this spring.  Gilley’s will offer Northern Nevadans a unique combination of total entertainment, including a restaurant, nightclub, live entertainment, DJs, dancing, those charming Gilley Girls and more. Line-dancing, two-stepping and boot-scooting will take center stage on the dance floor, supplemented by world-class barbecue including steaks, pork, and chicken, and following in the rich tradition of the annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off.

Those who follow pop culture–and almost anyone in search of quality recreation–will recognize Gilley’s as the iconic dance hall and saloon featured in the country classic film, Urban Cowboy. That concept has been replicated successfully at clubs in Texas, Oklahoma and Las Vegas, but it’s an exciting first for the Reno/Sparks area, as well as a fitting and fun nod to Northern Nevada’s rich ranching history.

And Yes, There Will Be A Bull.

GilleysBullRiding

Gilley’s will open with 10,000-plus square feet in the space formerly occupied by the venerable Trader Dick’s restaurant and lounge.

Presidential Pig Race 2012 to Predict America’s Next President

WHAT: 2012 Presidential Pig Race
WHEN:  11 a.m., Thursday, August 30th, 2012, during The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off
WHERE:  The corner of 11th & Victorian in Sparks, just outside of John Ascuaga’s Nugget

nugget rib cook off logoJohn Ascuaga’s Nugget is putting the “pork” in politics at this year’s Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off at John Ascuaga’s Nugget!  In a completely unscientific method of predicting America’s next Commander in Chief, pigs dressed to represent “Obama” and “Romney” will race down Victorian Avenue, oinking for your vote.

Just like the real 2012 Presidential candidates, these little piggies will be pounding the pavement!

See which pig “squeals” the top spot, and wins by a snout!

If your prediction falls short, you can always join the half-a-million people chowing down on more than 100 tons of ribs at one of the largest BBQ festivals in the country. The 24th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off runs from August 29 – September 3, 2012.

DRAG RACING EVENT FUEL INJECTS THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY HOT AUGUST NIGHTS CELEBRATION

40278_417588031460_36087236460_5210075_2478651_nA fan favorite gone for many years makes a repeat appearance for the Hot August Nights 25th Anniversary. The Official Hot August Nights Classic Car Drag Racing event will take place from August 10th through August 13th in the west parking lot of John Ascuaga’s Nugget.

The smell of burning rubber and gasoline paired with classic eye candy and high adrenaline creates a habitual dynamic draw to the Hot August Nights Drag Races. Ten years ago, 2001 marked the last year the Drags were conducted at the Reno-Stead Airport. The popular event had to be cancelled indefinitely, until now.

Full Throttle Performance and John Ascuaga’s Nugget decided to bring back a beloved element of Hot August Nights to contribute to a successful 25th year celebration.

The drag race event consists of approximately an eighth of a mile track and will take place in the west parking lot of John Ascuaga’s Nugget from 12pm to 10pm August 10-13. Hot August Nights volunteers and car participants will gain free entry into the event. The gate fee for the general public is $10 daily. To enter your car in a race, vehicles must be 1972 or older, with an American or European make. The cost to race is $25 per vehicle, per day for registered car participants and $45 per vehicle, per day for non-registered car participants. Tires must be D.O.T. approved (no slicks), no nitro/nitrous and no racing fuels allowed. Daily prize for the fastest overall time will be awarded.

Giving Thanks in Reno Tahoe: Holiday Feasts, Donating Gizzards & SNOW

Fall leavesCan you believe 2011 is only seven weeks away?! Where has 2010 gone? Each year I find myself asking the same question. I’m sure  it doesn’t help that in Reno Tahoe there are at least 260 days of special events each year – helping the year just whiz by.

But the year is not over yet! With the holiday season upon us, it’s time to dust off those ski boots, dig out the winter gear from the basement and prepare to feast! If you’re in Reno Tahoe over Thanksgiving, the area has LOTS to offer. We’ve compiled a list of happenings in the area – enjoy! KhanDonate your gizzard: If waiting in ungodly long lines before the sun rises the day after Thanksgiving isn’t your thing, pack up the family and head north to the Animal Ark to see Mother Nature in all her natural glory. Plus, if you have any raw turkey necks and gizzards left over from your holiday meal, the critters at the Ark will be very grateful for the donation. Check out the coyotes and bobcats as they put on their gorgeous winter coats and witness as the bears prepare for their long winter hibernation.

Tap into your creative side: Let’s be honest. For some of us, the day after Thanksgiving is meant to be a day of recovery. Rather than stay at home tempted by the lure of leftovers, why not explore Reno’s arts and culture? There is less than one week remaining to check out Pablo Picasso’s Musical Instruments exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art. Or jump right into the next holiday with the Eldorado Hotel Casino’s newest musical production – Christmas on Broadway.  Shop for unique gifts at John Ascuaga’s Nugget and Williams LTD ”Crafts for Christmas event November 26-28 at the Nugget’s Rose Ballroom. The event is free and will feature more than 100 Christmas craft and gift booths.  Had enough arts? Watch the Nevada Wolfpack as they take on Boise St, or catch the Reno Bighorns in action against Bakersfield. The leftovers will always be there, these exhibits and sporting events won’t.

Snow BranchLet is snow, let is snow! This weekend the daytime highs in Reno are falling into the mid-30s and the National Weather Service is calling for a 70% chance of snow Saturday and Sunday! Skiers and boarders across Reno Tahoe will be donning a permagrin in anticipation. A handful of ski resorts are preparing to open for the 2010-2011 season!
