THE FORCE WILL BE STRONG AT THE 2011 RENO BALLOON RACES

darth_vader5Prepare yourself for something far from expected at this year’s Great Reno Balloon Race. While walking on Rancho San Rafael’s scenic fairgrounds between the nylon walls of traditional, vibrantly colored hot air balloons, take a moment to stand back and gaze at the sprouting horizon as you might spot a balloon that stands out amongst its cheery peers.

Fans will come face to face with their favorite Sith Lord. The highly anticipated 86-foot tall Darth Vader balloon will be traveling all the way from Belgium for the 30th Anniversary of the Great Reno Balloon Race. Pilots Benoit and Michel Lambert have traveled all over the world with the balloon, making appearances in countries such as France, Thailand and Canada.

As this is Darth Vader’s first journey to the Biggest Little City, we encourage you to welcome the Dark Side of the Force by sporting your best Star Wars gear to the Balloon Races.

Other unique shapes to be seen at this year’s race include: The Bonanza Casino sponsored soccer ball, The Wilbur May Foundation’s Hopper T. Frog, and Betty Jean, a new butterfly balloon. For more information on this year’s participating balloons and sponsorship options, visit www.renoballoon.com or call (775) 826-1181.

May the force be with you.

Gentle Giants: Great Reno Balloon Race colors the Sierra Sky in September

The Great Reno Balloon Race returns for its 28th year Sept. 11, 12 and 13 to Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in northwest Reno, showcasing more than 100 hot-air balloons from all over the world. This year’s event will include the World’s Largest Pajama Party on Saturday, Sept. 12. So stay in your PJs and don’t be afraid to show off that bed-head in the hilarious Bed- Head Competition.

Crowd favorites return this year with the Wells Fargo-sponsored bumble bees and stagecoach- shaped balloon. The Energizer Bunny keeps going and going as it makes yet another appearance this year, with ears as tall as the presidents’ faces on Mount Rushmore! Smokey the Bear returns to the Balloon Race thanks to Sierra Front Wildfire Cooperators. The Mayflower balloon will make its third event appearance this year thanks to Sierra Moving Systems.

A new shape will make its debut at the Balloon Race this year thanks to the Wilbur D. May Foundation.  Pandy the Panda Bear, standing at 100-feet tall, will provide tethered rides to children after Mass Ascension each day. Lastly, Tony the Tiger will appear, standing nearly nine stories tall!

It’s worth the wake to see these gentle giants ascend into the early morning sky for a spectacular show of bright colors and fun shapes. For a full event schedule, travel resources and parking information, visit www.renoballoon.com or call (775) 826-1181.

Balloon, air races return to Reno-Tahoe

BalloonsHigh-flying fun returns to Reno-Tahoe with the Great Reno Balloon Race this weekend, Sept. 5-7, followed by the National Championship Air Races next weekend, Sept. 10-14.

From a humble beginning in 1982 with only 20 balloonists participating, the Great Reno Balloon Race has blossomed into one of the country’s premier events for balloon enthusiasts – Reno’s festival is the largest free hot air balloon gathering in the country.

The event now boasts more 140,000 spectators viewing more than 100 balloons soar above the Sierra sky. Less a competition than an opportunity for camaraderie, the festival offers no shortage of parties and events, along with the occasional free ride.

Over three days, spectators make their way to Reno’s Rancho San Rafael Park (map) to be part of the “Dawn Patrol” festivities. Also new for this year is the World’s Largest Pajama Party, where participants are encouraged to arrive in their best (or worst) PJs on Saturday, and compete for bragging rights in contests for “best bed-head,” while enjoying movies, hot chocolate and games during the race’s famous dawn patrol.

The Right Stuff
For Reno-Tahoe visitors seeking an adrenaline fix, the National Championship Air Races showcases some of the world’s best pilots taking on a grueling course at daredevil speeds.

Over five days, six classes of aircraft race up close and personal at speeds up to 500 mph.  When the racers aren’t in the sky, spectators will be wowed by flying demonstrations, and displays, including a world-class air show featuring the USAF “Thunderbirds”, top aerobatic performers, military and civil flight demonstrations, and a large display of static aircraft.

The Air Races have been run since 1964 near Reno, and are currently held at Reno Stead Field, about eight miles North of Reno.
