Stampede Bringing Horsepower to Reno This Weekend

dsc_2319

The 2nd annual Torchmate Ultra4 Reno Stampede race will be held this week on September 10 and 11 at Exit 28 Motorsports just outside of Reno, Nevada. There will be multiple parties and events for fans and drivers throughout the week at both Exit 28 Motorsports and the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV. The unlimited 4 wheel drive vehicles known as Ultra4 cars have already begun descending upon Reno.  For those that haven’t seen an Ultra4 race in person, this is a great opportunity to see extreme horsepower at its finest. These cars are capable of speeds in excess of 100 MPH and are able to traverse some of the most treacherous rocky terrain, and this year’s race features a brand new short course section to watch these powerful vehicles soar through the air.

The Ultra4 Torchmate Reno Stampede was created by the founders of King of The Hammers, which is regularly referred to as “the hardest one day off-road race in the world.” With more than 120 miles of brutal course laid out and only 8 hours to finish, The Torchmate Reno Stampede will prove to be just as hard, if not harder than this year’s King of The Hammers. Only 19 of 50 cars finished The Stampede last year and this year’s race is nearly double the miles. This weekend’s race will definitely test the limits of both Ultra4 cars and their drivers.

Some of the biggest names in Ultra4 Racing will be on hand this weekend, including this year’s King of The Hammers winner and current Ultra4 Series leader, Monster Energy’s Shannon Campbell and Torchmate Racing’s JT Taylor and Jesse Haines. Last year’s King of the Hammers winner, Loren Healy,  and Aussie Ben Napier who is currently 2nd in the 2011 Ultra4 series will also be racing this weekend.

Spectators will have their choice of viewing areas. Exit 32’s spectator area offers a short course section, views of the valley for high-speed racing and live action in the pits and concession areas. Exit 28 offers the gnarly rock crawl section known as Giant’s Throne where many spectators saw tons of carnage and rollovers at last year’s event. Spectators are encouraged to bring camp chairs and binoculars and will be able to travel between the two spectator areas. Admission is free on Friday for qualifying rounds and $20 for adults, and $10 for children on Saturday.  Fans will be able to save $5 on admission if they purchase their tickets Friday during the qualifying rounds!4988256658_7689482a7f_o

Soweto Gospel Choir brings African Spirit to Reno

soweto-gospel-choirAny choir that has a million and a half views on YouTube must be something special.  The Soweto Gospel Choir has that and more, and they’re performing in Reno this Friday.  I decided to check them out online before seeing them in person, and they exude some pretty exciting energy.

The group’s repertoire ranges from traditional African gospel songs, to covers of Bob Dylan.

Speaking of choirs, I’ve heard that the RSCVA and Artown are joining forces to host choirs from around the world during the 2011 American International Choral Festival in Reno.  The festival will bring choirs of all ages and nationalities together, giving us the opportunity to see choral music performed in the streets along the downtown River walk.  That’ll be in May of 2011.

The Soweto Gospel Choir concert is part of Artown’s Encore Series, which is what they call the events that happen outside of the usual Artown schedule of July 1-31.  You can catch the choir and a preview of the International Choral Festival on Friday, March 26th at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno.

CANFEST celebrates beer the way it was meant to be enjoyed – in a can

canfest logoBuckbean Brewing Company, Nevada’s largest production microbrewery, is challenging beer snobs to think outside the bottle.

The brewery is sponsoring the first ever CANFEST – Reno International Canned Beer Festival, the first international beer judging and tasting for canned beer, to take place at the Grand Sierra Resort, Oct. 23.

Buckbean is a homegrown Northern Nevada favorite beer, and packages its beers exclusively in 16-ounce cans. It turns out microbrewers who opt for the can over the bottle is an elite fraternity, and Buckbean wants to help expose this burgeoning segment to the world, while crushing the myths about beer in a can.

Along with Buckbean Brewing Company, Big Sky Brewing Company, Oskar Blues, Ukiah Brewing Company, Maui Brewing Company, Surly Brewing Company, New Belgium Brewing Company, Uncommon Brewers, and Rochester Mills Brewing Company are a few that have confirmed they will attend the event.

The competition takes place at the Grand Sierra Theater, from 6:30-10:30 p.m. Judging will take place prior to the public tasting. Celebrities from the beer world will judge the beers individually, based on categories still to be decided. Beer seminars, beer and food pairings and a forum of brewers that can beer are planned.

Ticket prices are $35 per person and room packages will be available.

New nightclub to open with motorcycle spectacle

Grand Sierra Resort sets the stage for a heart-pounding, action packed evening to celebrate the grand opening party of Xtreme and caps the night off with a record-breaking jump by nationally recognized rider Ryan Capes.

Capes, the newest addition to the Livfast team, will attempt a 300-foot ramp-to-ramp jump to smash the current record of 252 feet set in 1999. The jump from metal, man-constructed ramps pays homage to pioneers of the sport, such as Evil Knievel, and is considered more dangerous than jumps from traditional dirt ramps.

The party continues on with a grand opening celebration in Xtreme with a performance by MiniKiss, the hottest, littlest Kiss tribute band. The group hits the stage for a dynamic live performance of the renowned band’s legendary anthems.  It’s sure to be an unforgettable night as the mini tribute band brings “Crazy, Crazy Nights” to the hottest new bar scene in Reno.
