Rib Cookers

Twenty-three of the world’s most decorated and talented rib cookers will feed event goers, while competing for a total cash purse of $14,500 and the title of “Best in the West” – a designation many cookers consider to be the ultimate prize in high-volume competitive BBQ.  In 2013, Famous Dave’s BBQ took home the title of “Best in the West,” their third time following wins in 2006 & 2007 at the event. Another top honor – the 2013 People’s Choice Award was given to Chicago Barbecue Co. See the full list of rib cookers here: http://www.nuggetribcookoff.com/About-The-Event/Cookers.html

2014’s winners will be announced on Monday, September 1, 2014 at the West End Stage at 2 p.m.

Rib Eating Competition

Major League Eating (MLE), the governing body of all stomach-centric sports, will host the 9th annual Nugget World Rib Eating Championship at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 27, at the Main Stage area. The country’s best competitive eaters, including Joey Chestnut will vie for $5,000 and the title of World Champion.  It’s estimated the top competitors will consume eight-plus pounds of meat during the 12-minute competition.

Free headline concerts include: Lit on Wednesday, Eric Hutchinson on Thursday, Joan Osborne’s Soul Revue on Friday, Joe Diffie on Saturday, Jefferson Starship on Sunday and Robert Randolph & The Family Band on Monday. Nation’s Greatest Eaters to Compete in the Nugget World Rib Eating Championship

Top ranked Major League Eaters will battle cheek-to-jowl at the 8th Annual Nugget World Rib-Eating Championship in Sparks, Nevada on Wednesday, August 28, 2013.  The 12-minute, all-you-can-eat contest will kick-off the 25th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off at John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Resort over an extended Labor Day weekend.  At stake is a $5,000 cash purse and the title of Best in the West Nugget World Rib Eating Champion.

2012NuggetWorldRibEatingChampionship

Joey “Jaws” Chestnut of San Jose, CA, the #1-ranked eater in the world and six-time July 4th Hot Dog Eating Champion, secured his sixth Nugget World Rib Eating Championship title here last year by downing 8 pounds of pork rib meat in 12 minutes.  Chestnut will face #7-ranked eater, Miki Sudo, who defeated Chestnut in a 6-minute rib contest earlier this year in Chicago. Sudo has the speed, but can she endure over the grueling 12-minute marathon at the Nugget? Or will Chestnut’s experience in the long-form event pay off?

Chestnut also faces #4-ranked eater, Matt Stonie, who defeated Chestnut in another discipline this year, and came second at the Nugget in 2012. Both Sudo and Stonie will push Chestnut like he has never been pushed before in 2013. He faces his biggest challenge in an event he has dominated for years.

Other top-contenders vying for a spot in the rib eating record books will be Juan “More Bite” Rodriguez  and Erik “The Red” Denmark.  More than a dozen eaters will compete for the title of Nugget World Rib Eating Champion. Ranked Major League Eaters Dax Swanson and Steve Hendry are making their Nugget debuts. Joining them will be Reno comedian Drake Nelson.

The contest will feature St. Louis-style ribs and will conform to the MLE judging model, where ribs are weighed before and after competition to determine the exact amount of rib meat eaten by each competitor.

Hosted by John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Resort, the 25th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off features 24 of the world’s most decorated rib cookers vying for prize money and bragging rights. The rib cook-off attracts more than 500,000 people every year to devour more than 230,000 pounds of ribs over the extended Labor Day weekend.
