San Francisco 49er fans listen up! Quarterback Alex Smith will be in Sparks on Friday, April 23 visiting Van Gorder Elementary School as part of Fuel Up to Play 60.
Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school program that encourages the availability and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, along with 60 minutes of daily physical activity. The program was founded by National Dairy Council® (NDC) and the NFL and is based on a mutual commitment to the health of the next generation.
Van Gorder Elementary School leads the state with the healthiest and most active students participating in FUTP 60. Smith’s visit to the school a reward for the students’ excellent commitment to health through their participation in the program. Alex Smith will lead a school assembly and participate in a photo shoot with 2 students who have shown outstanding leadership in the school’s health initiative.
Sparks Mayor Gino Martini will also be there to present the school with a Proclamation declaring April 23rd 2010, “Van Gorder Health and Fitness Day.”
In conjunction with Fuel Up to Play 60, Van Gorder Elementary has established “Health & Fitness” as one of their core values and is dedicated to improving overall student health by increasing awareness of nutrient-rich foods and increasing students dailyconsumption of dairy products, fruits, vegetable and whole grains, and has implemented a number of physical activities programs:
- Jr. Joggers Jump Rope for Heart
- Martial Arts and Yoga
- Quarterly student recognition for health and fitness accomplishments
