Discover the New Natural History Museum at UNR!

Imagine a place in Reno where you can view over 92,000 different species of plants, hold a taxidermy bat, and check out a tier 0ne university all at the same time. What you have imagined probably is not too far off from the new Museum of Natural History at the University of Nevada. As a combined project from the university’s biology and natural resources and environmental science programs, this collection of living and non-living species represents the discovery of life throughout the history of Northern Nevada.

The front part of the museum is filled with brilliant displays made by students of the graduate program. There are rare plants, huge preserved animals (including the state mammal, the bighorn sheep), butterflies, and a lot of other regional wildlife. Behind the scenes, however, is a catalog of thousands of different species of plants and animals, where museum curator Arnold (Jerry) Tiehm will be more than happy to show different species of beetles, birds, and even pine cones!

The museum is open on weekdays during university hours, 8-5. Call 775-784-1105 for more information or to schedule a visit. Admission is FREE!
