Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11th, and Reno is doing its part to celebrate our veterans and to have some fun!

Idelwood Park will be hosting the Inaugural Veterans Day Run in Reno. The race will feature two options: a 5K run and a 1-mile walk/run for families and supporters. The 5K will begin at 4:11 p.m. with the 1-mile race beginning immediately after. The 5K will be professionally timed. Tickets are available on the Veterans Day Run website, and when purchasing your ticket you will be given the opportunity to make a donation to Operation Gratitude. This organization’s purpose is to “lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military.” Operation Gratitude sends over 100,000 care packages each year filled with snacks, entertainment, and letters of support to Veterans, new recruits, first responders, wounded warriors, care givers, and U.S. Service members deployed oversees. Making a small donation along with your race registration fee will be a huge help to this organization. After the race, all runners and walkers will receive a commemorative finishers pin, either a 5K finisher’s medal or a 1-mile finisher’s ribbon, a finisher’s certificate and finish-line refreshments. Participants also have the opportunity to purchase race T-shirts. Veterans and Active Duty Military Members will receive discounts on registration prices. For a schedule of race events, registration pricing, and more information check out the Veterans Day Race website.

The City of Reno will hold its annual Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. on November 11. The parade will begin at the historic Virginia Street Bridge and will end at the Fifth Street intersection. The theme of the parade, following Nevada’s big birthday, is “150 Years of Liberty Through Service”. The Grand Marshall is Army veteran Major John Riggs, who graduated from Reno High School in 1964. There are 75 entries to the parade this year, including local veterans associations and high school bands. Mayor Bob Cashell is also scheduled to speak at the beginning of the parade. Come out to Virginia Street Bridge on Tuesday to support our Veterans!

The Colin Ross Senior Music Program will be presenting a concert on Veterans Day and offering a workshop on Tuesday evening at the Neil Road Recreation center (at 3925 Neil Road). Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the concert and workshop will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Admission is free for every Veteran (with a VA card) and a guest, and $5 for non-veteran participants. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done by calling 334-2262.

New Plans for JA Nugget in Sparks

The international architecture and design firm Cuningham Group Architecture Inc. has been selected to assist in the redesign of John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nevada.

NuggetGamingFloorCuningham Group put together a comprehensive design plan for the Nugget that reflects the resort’s strategy to reinvigorate and reposition the property as THE place to go in Northern Nevada. The design will feature upgraded finishes, colors and lighting to evoke a sense of fun, excitement and energy.

The renovations will feature new experiences in  food and beverage, entertainment, gaming and rooms offerings intended to honor traditional Nugget values while generally broadening their appeal.  The Nugget’s new owners plan to invest up to $50 million dollars into the property in the coming years to update and renovate the Nugget’s casino floor, hotel rooms, restaurant concepts and entertainment venues.

Fans of laid-back, all-stops-out, down-country good times will have a new place to party when the Sparks Nugget casino resort debuts Gilley’s Reno Sparks later this spring.  Gilley’s will offer Northern Nevadans a unique combination of total entertainment, including a restaurant, nightclub, live entertainment, DJs, dancing, those charming Gilley Girls and more. Line-dancing, two-stepping and boot-scooting will take center stage on the dance floor, supplemented by world-class barbecue including steaks, pork, and chicken, and following in the rich tradition of the annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off.

Those who follow pop culture–and almost anyone in search of quality recreation–will recognize Gilley’s as the iconic dance hall and saloon featured in the country classic film, Urban Cowboy. That concept has been replicated successfully at clubs in Texas, Oklahoma and Las Vegas, but it’s an exciting first for the Reno/Sparks area, as well as a fitting and fun nod to Northern Nevada’s rich ranching history.

And Yes, There Will Be A Bull.

GilleysBullRiding

Gilley’s will open with 10,000-plus square feet in the space formerly occupied by the venerable Trader Dick’s restaurant and lounge.

Ultimate inspirational destination: North Lake Tahoe

Written by guest blogger: Aimee Claire

Situated on the beautiful California-Nevada border, Lake Tahoe is spoken of with bated breath by vacationers, and is a stunning testimonial to the United States’ classic Big Country. It’s a diverse location, with four main shores each with a different character; all with azure waters, lovely beaches and snow-capped mountains in the background.

Where is North Lake Tahoe?

The North Lake Tahoe coast on the Nevada side is a relatively quiet, upmarket affair.  It is part of the Nevada State Park, and it is very well looked after. The area can be identified via the southwards meandering of Highway 28 until it reaches Spooner Lake and US Route 50. Highway 28 takes the traveler through heavily wooded pine forests with blue skies overhead, and with plenty of wildlife to be seen.

Obviously, this type of backdrop lends itself to outdoors pursuits of all kinds, and the choice of holiday amusement is dependent on the places where travelers stay. The choices are many, even in the relatively unsullied North Lake Tahoe area, and there is something for every desire, guaranteed.

The best places to be

Three of the best places to visit for first time travelers to the area are Incline Village, Crystal Bay, and Sand Harbor; all three are great activity bases and there are differing types of accommodations available.

Incline Village

For a relaxing game of golf in the summer months, hiking, mountain biking, or horse riding, Incline Village (named for the Great Incline Tramway, built by loggers back in 1878) is the place to stay. During the winter, and early spring, diehard skiers and snowboarders can plunge through the annual average 10 feet of snow to their hearts’ content, although the less sporting visitor can still enjoy it with the yearly North Lake Tahoe SnowFest, involving parades, competitions, parties and theater.

The Hyatt High Sierra Lodge condos can be rented on a nightly basis, or savvy regulars can buy timeshares in that location, making it a good value, comfort-driven stay. For travelers who prefer hotel set ups, the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort Spa and Casino provides 4.5* accommodation with all the trappings, but if a cheap hotel with bed and breakfast is required, the Parkside Inn offers lovely big rooms and a continental breakfast; it is recommended to book with them direct, rather than through an affiliate travel site.

Crystal Bay

For those that prefer to play in the casinos of Nevada, Crystal Bay offers four of these buzzing establishments, which include hotels and restaurants, allowing game play, water sports, live entertainment and excellent food for the duration of any stay. The Cal-Neva Casino Resort has a swimming pool that crosses the state line, and the staff service there is impeccable.

Sand Harbor

Sand Harbor is the real North Lake Tahoe home of water sports, with Jet Ski rentals that allow visitors to explore the entire coastline of the area if they wish. There’s also scuba diving and kayaking for a couple of quieter ways to investigate the beautiful clear crystal waters. The beach at Sand Harbor is renowned for the cleanest standards and even in the summer months is unlikely to be overcrowded.

Sand Harbor itself has no accommodations, so the nearest places to stay are based at Incline Village, and slightly further away at Crystal Bay.

Peppermill Resort Spa Casino awarded TripAdvisor GreenLeaders Gold Status

The Peppermill Resort Spa Casino has been named a gold level partner in the new TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program, helping travelers plan greener trips by identifying environmentally-friendly accommodations across the U.S. TripAdvisor GreenLeaders have met a set of environmental standards developed for TripAdvisor by a leading environmental consulting firm, with input from expert partners. Travelers can now search for accommodations that have a GreenLeaders status on the TripAdvisor site, and view a detailed list of environmentally-friendly practices that they can expect at each location.

The eco-conscious Peppermill Resort Spa Casino lists amongst its green initiatives a $9.7 million geothermal system which heats 100% of the Resort’s domestic water and mechanical heat throughout the 2.1 Million square foot facility, 24/7, effectively replacing the natural gas boilers that once heated the facility. This renewable energy allows the Peppermill to reduce its dependency on fossil fuels and save the company millions of dollars in natural gas use. Additional green initiatives include:

  • A partnership with Clean the World, a nonprofit that collects, sorts and processes discarded soaps and shampoos from hospitality partners and redistributes into the hands of Third World children whose lives are threatened by poor hygiene. The Peppermill diverts more than 1,000 pounds of soap and shampoo per month from local landfills and to communities in need. Annually, soap recycled from the Peppermill will serve more than 1,200 children a year.
  • The Peppermill participates in an organics/composting program where food scraps from the general waste produced in the casino’s kitchens are collected by Waste Management and are then transported to a local composting facility, where the material is processed and turned into compost. The production of compost is a natural process, where plant and animal materials are decomposed by microbes. The final product is used for gardening to improve soil. The Peppermill diverts 60 yards of organics waste from the local landfill monthly, and as time goes on, that amount will increase.
  • Installed over 30,000 square feet of Artificial Grass Turf, saving approximately 5,184,000 gallons of water per season as well as reducing our chemicals and pesticide use.
  • Installation of a water recycling system for all laundry services, conserving millions of gallons of water each year. Installed an Aqua Recycling system that captures, filters and reuses commercial wash machine grey laundry water. An ongoing property-wide water conservation program through room placards encouraging reuse of towels and water conservation and changing guest bed linens and towels per stay on a request-only basis.
  • Creation of a virtually paperless HR department through the implementation of new software systems and transferring all forms and documents into digital applications.

The TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program was developed in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the United Nations Environment Programme. For more information, please visit www.tripadvisor.com/GreenLeaders.

6 Last Minute Travel Planning Apps

Despite our best efforts, sometimes circumstances out of our control force us to change our plans. Anybody who has ever found themselves without a place to stay as the sun sets in a foreign city knows the value of good advice or a travel guidebook. Likewise, a last minute business or family trip can force us to book the easiest hotel and rental car, or eat the most accessible and obvious meal, despite better and lower cost alternatives nearby.

Fortunately, the digital world is leveling the playing fields. With a smart phone in your pocket or tablet in your bag, a number of easy-to-use apps are making it possible to enjoy first-class amenities without prior planning AND on a budget.

If you’re often on-the-go, add these apps to your handheld arsenal:

Reno Tahoe USA

reno tahoe usaWhen a travel app is valuable even to locals, it’s worth downloading, and the official Reno Tahoe app certainly makes the cut. With all the entertainment constantly coming through town, the app will keep you up-to-date, in addition to offering daily snow reports, lift statuses, and even golf course green fees. When you’re walking around town, use the onboard map to locate restaurants that fit your palate. There may even be a corresponding coupon you can use in the app to save a few bucks on your bill.

Hotel Tonight

Hotel TonightAs simple as it sounds, this free app for Android and iOS specializes in last minute hotels. Each day at noon in the time zone for a particular market, that day’s deals are announced, based on availability at partner hotels. If a place is completely under-booked, they’ll often mark the prices down to 70 percent off. At most any city in the U.S. and throughout Europe, you can count on at least 20 percent off, just by waiting to commit until the day of your stay.

Triposo

TriposoBilled as a “living, breathing travel guide”, Triposo is working hard to corner the market on up-to-date travel info by outcompeting paper books that may quickly contain outdated information. Their database already includes 200 countries and 8,000 destinations, so chances are that your next stop will be covered. Perhaps best of all, the guides update themselves while you’re connected, but you don’t need internet or wireless coverage to access the guides and maps from your Android or iOS phones and devices, so you’re good-to-go even when you’re off-the-grid (provided you keep that battery charged).

Foodspotting

FoodspottingAlthough plenty of apps exist to find great places to eat, Foodspotting might just be the most fun (which is also why OpenTable recently scooped it up for $10 million). Let’s say you’re in Memphis, but you’re not in the mood for BBQ. Foodspotting pulls up a map of the area, but instead of the names of restaurants, you get photographs posted by other users, pinned to the location of where you can get it. An hour later, you’re sitting at The Elegant Farmer, enjoying their Vegetable Plate, instead of at the chain spot next to your hotel.

Verbalize It

verbalize itJust in case you had any doubts about the small world we live in today, VerbalizeIt is here to connect you anywhere you go. This app doesn’t work like a traditional phone or internet translator, which often provide awkward translations and can be tedious to use. Instead, this iOS and Android app hires human translators who are available 24/7 to translate between English and Spanish, Hindi, Mandarin, French, German and Portuguese. The founder was inspired by an emergency trip to a hospital in rural China where nobody understood him. With the app used on a phone with the speaker setting, a live translator instantly helps two people communicate their exact words. Usage is sold in time increments per language, and the only downside may be that cell service or Wifi is necessary to access the translators.

Milewise

milewiseFlight search engines may be a dime-a-dozen, but for constant travelers, Milewise is worth knowing about. With airlines constantly consolidating and combining their rewards programs in new and confusing ways with their partners, it can be tough to keep track of which flights are eligible for reward travel. With MileWise, all of your accounts are kept in one place, and any flight you search for where you can utilize your miles will be highlighted (as well as those that will help get you to the next benchmark in your miles accumulation). They’ll also give you a heads up to avoid letting miles expire and will estimate the actual value of your rewards, helping you get the most out of your hard-earned miles. Finally, you can set price alerts just like most other search engines so you get the best possible deal.

Has an app ever helped you out of a bind in an unfamiliar city or foreign land? Which of these apps (or others) do you recommend?

Reno Tahoe USA APP

“There are so many choices for entertainment, special events, outdoor adventure and relaxation in Reno, Sparks and North Lake Tahoe that it can be difficult for visitors to narrow down their options before they get here,” said RSCVA President and CEO Christopher Baum. “More and more visitors are relying on mobile technology to point them in the right direction for information on their passions at any given moment, and the new Reno Tahoe USA app provides visitors with more information, and more control, of their overall travel experience.”

The Reno Tahoe USA app provides potential visitors with information on which hotels may be best suited to their needs; what concerts, events and entertainment will be offered during their visit; where they can get outdoors to enjoy the fresh air, ski resorts and golf courses; as well as where they might find a great restaurant, a world-class spa or unique shopping throughout the destination. Once visitors are here, the app uses their location to help them find activities of interest within walking distance. The app also provides easy access to a variety of coupons, deals and discounts offered by dozens of local businesses.

In support of the popular “buy local” campaigns being launched in destinations across the country, the RSCVA worked with Reno-based KPS3 Marketing to develop the Reno Tahoe USA app, which it designed to maximize, and to simplify, the number of options presented to visitors.

“Travelers have come to depend on their phone for guidance in new destinations,” said KPS3 Vice President of Creative and Technical Services Rob Gaedtke. “This application puts visitors in control of that experience and allows the RSCVA to share the myriad offerings found in the Reno Tahoe area.”

The RSCVA and its partners are also making the new Reno Tahoe USA app more than just a source of information. One new user of the Reno Tahoe USA app will be given a three-day, two-night stay, at their choice of the Eldorado Hotel Casino or Silver Legacy Resort Casino, each month through October 2013.

The Reno Tahoe USA app can be downloaded at the iPhone Mobile App Store, the Android Google Play Store or at www.VisitRenoTahoe.com/mobile.
