300381_187155851354888_113991988671275_428467_5538050_n301382_186173698119770_113991988671275_425974_1941555_nCommRow will celebrate its grand opening on October 1, becoming Reno’s first “Urban Adventure Destination.” This property will inject a sample of the region’s outdoor thrills into the heart of Reno’s downtown corridor.

Towering 164-feet above the landmark Reno arch is the world’s tallest climbing wall on the 16-story building’s exterior façade. Inside, climbing enthusiasts or curious beginners will find a world-class bouldering center, plus event space and slacklines. The entire climbing facility, known as BaseCamp, is built to international competition standards but also first-timer friendly.

CommRow also features a menagerie of culturally-diverse eateries and bars dubbed “TheRow”, which were developed by two seasoned restaurateurs who have worked with such acclaimed chefs as Bobby Flay, Charlie Palmer and Bryan Voltaggio. Guests will find something to tempt any palate, from traditional tacos to fresh tuna tartars. Libations from classic cocktails to a selection of more than 100 tequilas can also be found. On the second floor, watch all of the bouldering action while enjoying either smoothies and housemade granolas, or wines by the glass and draft beers.

Two live entertainment venues known as Cargo and Centric will feature local performers and national touring acts. During the day, the 400-person capacity Cargo will transform into a fitness center with a focus on core training. Additional meeting and event space is also available.

Other attractions are slated to open in 2012, including the pet-friendly HANG Hotel in spring, and an outdoor “Adventure Deck” with BMX and skate parks, outdoor bouldering and more.

CommRow’s developer Fernando Leal of Chicago- and Reno-based L3 Development LLC states, “This is a huge opportunity to elevate Reno’s perception in the eyes of both locals and visitors alike, showcasing it for what it truly is – a vibrant, multi-faceted destination.”

Latest Technology Offers Unique Access to Eldorado Hotel Casino

Eldorado App

Imagine having the power to book a hotel stay, make dinner reservations, take a virtual tour of your room, find the best place to park and the best slot machines to play all in the palm of your hand.  Now anyone with an Apple iPhone, iPad or iTouch has that capability, thanks to a new Application from the Eldorado Hotel Casino.

The Eldorado launched the new App this morning, which can be downloaded for free in the Apple App Store.  iPhone users will be impressed by the usability, functionality and interactivity of the Downtown Reno Hotel Casino’s new tech feature.  Built and developed in partnership with a San Francisco based technology company, this iPhone App is the first of its kind to hit the Reno business scene.

“This App goes leaps and bounds beyond what other Reno companies are doing with multimedia technology,“ says Chad Hallert, Director of Internet Marketing and E-Commerce at the Eldorado.  “Say you’re standing in front of The Brew Brothers restaurant.  Your iPhone will use GPS to detect your location and our App will show you the current specials we’re running inside.”  Even without internet access, the Eldorado iPhone App will still be more than 80% functional in “offline” mode.

Business guests will find the Eldorado iPhone App especially user-friendly.  Corporations, businesses and groups can access their own private meeting section to view group itineraries, speaker presentations, conference catering menus and more directly through a login page within the Eldorado App.

Other features include restaurant menus and event calendars with the option to make reservations or purchase tickets to concerts and shows at your fingertips.   Club Eldorado players can even look up their comps and points instantly without visiting a kiosk.  Watch for the “Slot Finder” coming in November, which will tell guests where their favorite games are located on the casino floor.  An Android version of the Eldorado App is already in the works and is set to launch in early December.

So order room service in the elevator on the way to your room and pinpoint exactly where you parked with the new Eldorado iPhone Application, which is now available for free at the Apple App Store.  A special offer will be given to the first 1,000 people to download.  For more information check out our iPhone App information in the Apple Store, on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube or call 775-786-5700.

Men’s Journal Names Reno among Top 25 Places to Live

Mens Journal.jpgIf you live in Reno or have been lucky enough to visit, you know it’s a no-brainer. It’s a great getaway, let alone a fantastic place to reside. There’s never a dull moment in the Biggest Little City, from year-round entertainment, recreational options galore and all at an affordable cost. Men’s Journal Magazine recognizes Reno’s AAA Aces ballpark, the Riverwalk District, Artown and the city’s proximity to abundant outdoor recreations as several reasons why Reno had to be among the top 25 cities for “Best Places to Live 2010”, according to the April issue of Men’s Journal magazine.

The top 25 cities were included in various categories and determined by three variables including median home price, cost of living compared to the rest of the United States and number of sunny days per year.  Reno is featured as tops for “Ski and Climb Without the Crowds” listing Reno’s median home price as $274,670, its cost of living as 13 percent higher than the rest of the nation, and boasting 252 sunny days per year.

“Having Reno named one of the best places to live is a huge honor for our city and residents,” said Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.  “We all know why we love this place, but the national recognition helps build credibility for our city as a top place to live, work and raise a family.  It also gets the word out about what makes our city so special including our downtown baseball park, Artown and burgeoning downtown.”

“Reno making a top places to live list helps increase awareness nationwide that Reno Tahoe is a happening place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy all this area offers, from downtown fun to high altitude adventure.” said Ellen Oppenheim, Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) President and CEO.  “The recent investment in area hotel-casino properties, spas and restaurants are additional outstanding amenities locals and visitors can take advantage of.”

The April issue of Men’s Journal featuring the “Best Places to Live 2010” is on newsstands now or visit www.mensjournal.com.

Men’s Journal has previously ranked Reno’s historic Old Southwest as one of ‘The Best Neighborhoods in America’ in their June 2009 issue.

We’ve been tooting our own horn for a while. It’s nice to get some validation, though, dontcha think?

Silver Peak to open new pizzeria near Reno Aces baseball stadium

300 east 2nd stThe owners of Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery will open a new restaurant in June 2010 in downtown Reno at 300 E. Second St., adjacent to the Reno Aces baseball stadium. The new restaurant will include a restaurant specializing in pizza made famous at Silver Peak’s original location, a full-service bar and restricted gaming. The owners have not yet named the new restaurant given its primary focus on pizza, but diners can expect a “Silver Peak-esque” twist to its identity.

“The construction of Aces Ballpark creates an opportunity for us to again participate in the revitalization of our downtown corridor,” said Silverman. “We’re excited to be part of the process, and look forward to seeing lots of locals and tourists enjoying the Freight House District area.”

Owners Schmidt and Silverman opened the first Silver Peak Restaurant and Brewery location on Wonder Street in Reno in 1999 and a second location in downtown Reno in 2004. Silver Peak is known throughout northern Nevada for its unique and original selection of food and beers brewed at its Wonder Street location.

The owners have no plans to make any changes to the original Wonder Street location, but are evaluating their total presence and priorities in the downtown Reno area.

300 E. Second is a 15-story tower and is located in downtown Reno, centrally located immediately across E. Second Street from the Reno Aces baseball stadium and within walking distance of City Hall, the County Courthouse and the Federal Court Building, Park Center Tower features panoramic views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains, Truckee Meadows and downtown Reno. The facility also offers direct access to Interstate-80, the Amtrak station and all major bus lines.

In conjunction with the parade, participants in the 19th Annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry will be serving up these treats (yes, they are sheep testicles) cooked in a variety of ways. If you’ve never tried one, you should, as they taste a lot like clams, mussels and real oysters. For more information, contact the Virginia City Visitor’s Center at (775) 847-4386.

Top Ten Reasons the Roaming Gnome should have come to Tahoe

travelocity-gnome-tahoeTop Ten Reasons the Roaming Gnome should should have broken his Cabin Fever in Tahoe rather than Utah in Travelocity’s Top Ski Destination contest.

1.     Ski in two states at the same time at Heavenly while looking at the deep blue of Lake Tahoe, even with your narrow gnome stance

2.     Go on a blind date with Tahoe Tessie (Lake Tahoe’s mythical resident “sea creature”).

3.     Depending on how the date goes, perhaps a quick wedding and an even quicker divorce in Reno.

4.     50 Tram laps at Squaw Valley USA to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first televised Winter Olympic Games.

5.     Tempt fate with a visit to the Donner Party museum,  just hope they don’t think you’re a chocolate filled gnome.

6.     Our drinks have personality with drinks like the ‘Wet Woody’, the ‘Scorpion’ and the ‘Flaming Kava Kava’. Gnomes keep your beards away from the flames!

7.     Forgot your skis?  No problem, where else but in Sparks can you get your skis, ride a Ferris Wheel and drive a NASCAR simulator in one mega sports store?

8.     Follow in the footsteps of Ol’ Blue Eyes and Marilyn Monroe in the tunnels at the historic Cal Neva Lodge

9.     Spend a little downtime at the spa before heading out for a long night in Reno

10.    Satisfy a late night hunger at what has been heralded as one of the best burgers in the country, the Awful Awful, awfully big, awfully good, don’t be scared my friend, you can do it.
