Idelwood Park will be hosting the Inaugural Veterans Day Run in Reno. The race will feature two options: a 5K run and a 1-mile walk/run for families and supporters. The 5K will begin at 4:11 p.m. with the 1-mile race beginning immediately after. The 5K will be professionally timed. Tickets are available on the Veterans Day Run website, and when purchasing your ticket you will be given the opportunity to make a donation to Operation Gratitude. This organization’s purpose is to “lift the spirits and meet the evolving needs of our Active Duty and Veteran communities and provide volunteer opportunities for all Americans to express their appreciation to members of our Military.” Operation Gratitude sends over 100,000 care packages each year filled with snacks, entertainment, and letters of support to Veterans, new recruits, first responders, wounded warriors, care givers, and U.S. Service members deployed oversees. Making a small donation along with your race registration fee will be a huge help to this organization. After the race, all runners and walkers will receive a commemorative finishers pin, either a 5K finisher’s medal or a 1-mile finisher’s ribbon, a finisher’s certificate and finish-line refreshments. Participants also have the opportunity to purchase race T-shirts. Veterans and Active Duty Military Members will receive discounts on registration prices. For a schedule of race events, registration pricing, and more information check out the Veterans Day Race website.

The City of Reno will hold its annual Veterans Day Parade at 11 a.m. on November 11. The parade will begin at the historic Virginia Street Bridge and will end at the Fifth Street intersection. The theme of the parade, following Nevada’s big birthday, is “150 Years of Liberty Through Service”. The Grand Marshall is Army veteran Major John Riggs, who graduated from Reno High School in 1964. There are 75 entries to the parade this year, including local veterans associations and high school bands. Mayor Bob Cashell is also scheduled to speak at the beginning of the parade. Come out to Virginia Street Bridge on Tuesday to support our Veterans!

The Colin Ross Senior Music Program will be presenting a concert on Veterans Day and offering a workshop on Tuesday evening at the Neil Road Recreation center (at 3925 Neil Road). Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. and the concert and workshop will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. Admission is free for every Veteran (with a VA card) and a guest, and $5 for non-veteran participants. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be done by calling 334-2262.

CANFEST bike drive

A chance to celebrate two things we all love and pair perfectly: Beer and Bikes

canfestCANFEST, the world’s largest canned beer festival, is partnering with the Reno Bike Project for the annual CANFEST Bike Drive. Participants in the drive have the opportunity to donate bicycles to receive complimentary entry to the beer festival. With more than 250 bikes collected throughout previous years, the annual CANFEST Bike Drive presents beer lovers with a chance to have fun doing what they love, all while simultaneously supporting a great cause.

The CANFEST Bike Drive rewards every bike donated to the Reno Bicycle Project with a free ticket to CANFEST on August 23, 2014. Presented by Joseph James Brewing Company, CANFEST is an unlimited tasting festival of beers poured exclusively from cans. Attendees will have the chance to sample 100-120 different brews throughout the evening from breweries all around the world. The festival takes place at Reno’s Peppermill Resort Hotel at 6pm.

The Reno Bike Project is a non-profit community bicycle shop and advocacy group committed to creating a nationally recognized, cycling-friendly community through advocacy and education in the Truckeee Meadows. Every bike donated to the Reno Bicycle Project is recycled or repurposed and put back on the road, making cycling more accessible to the public through recirculation of bikes into the community at affordable prices.

“CANFEST Bike Drive is a great opportunity for the community to give back and have fun as a result,” said Reno Bike Project Executive Director Noah Silverman. “We get to use the donated bikes to help kids, veterans and anyone else that needs or wants to get around on two wheels.”

To participate in the CANFEST Bike Drive, drop off new or used bicycles to The Reno Bike Project at 541 E 4th St to receive your free CANFEST ticket. Call 775-323-4488 or visit www.renobikeproject.com for shop hours and directions. The drive is active until August 22. Celebrate Pi Day in Reno Tahoe USA

Get creative when it comes to honoring Pi Day – there is no wrong way to celebrate. After all, it is centered around a number that is completely irrational!

But, if you’re looking for ideas to celebrate in a more semi-rational manor, read these tips for a pi-fect day in Reno Tahoe USA:

pie11. Eat Pie – it’s an excuse to eat pie any time of the day – carpe diem! Plus, Grand Sierra Resort is offering:

  • $3.14 slices of pie at Cafe Sierra or Charlie Palmer
  • $5 Apple and Chocolate Pie Cocktails at WET Ultra Lounge

2. Pizza pie, pot pie, pi-napple, pi-ne nuts, pi-ña coladas – the pi is the limit! Dig in to your favorite “pi” foods at your favorite Reno Tahoe dining spots. Try Noble Pie Parlor or JJ’s Pie Co.!

3. Run 3.14 miles along the Riverwalk in downtown Reno. (And then eat more pie.)

4. See how many things you can do with “pi” in them. Smell pi-ne trees, follow Visit Reno Tahoe on Pi-nterest… etc.

Happy Pi Day!
