Biggest Little Birthday Party

The City of Reno will host a Biggest Little Birthday Party event on Saturday, May 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. The festivities are taking place at and around the historic Virginia Street Bridge. 10308219_10152042101377050_3827381683256984145_n

103Residents are invited to join in the celebration and show their pride in the Biggest Little City. There will be a variety of entertainment options, and birthday cake will be served. The event will be happening during the annual downtown Reno River Festival.

Attendees of the Biggest Little Birthday Party will be able to participate in a special historic walking tour while using the new Reno Historical app or website. Each stop on the tour, which will be 12 different historic sites in Reno (see list below), will contain volunteers — many in period costumes — who will hand out play money. Tour participants will be asked to answer history trivia questions, download the new app and post about their experience on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

At 4:30 p.m., participants can use their fake money to bid on and win a keepsake deed during a reenactment of an 1868 auction of lots. While March 16, 2014 marks the 111th birthday for the incorporated City of Reno, this event is intended to commemorate and bring to life the events that occurred on May 9, 1868, the day that the first public auction of lots in the City was held.

The event is an official Nevada 150 event. The State of Nevada is currently celebrating its 150th birthday, or sesquicentennial. For more information about the City of Reno’s Nevada 150 campaign, visit Reno.gov/NV150.
