“Diverse; unique; powerful; innovative”- Artown 2014 lineup guarantees good time

posterPumped about upcoming Reno Artown? You’re not alone! And if you haven’t given Artown much thought, now’s the time to get excited! Artown takes the stage for its 19th season this July, upholding its reputation as a celebrated comprehensive arts and cultural festival, while promising to push the envelope and change perceptions with its unique 2014 schedule. Whether you’re an avid admirer of the arts, or an art amateur… whether you’ve attended Artown in past years or haven’t heard of Artown until now… there’s an event (or multiple) at this year’s Artown calling your name. With a state-of-the-art schedule that includes over 500-multidisciplinary events, from musical and theatrical performances, interactive presentations, workshops, and clinics, to art exhibits, children’s events and more, Reno’s 2014 Artown is not to be missed. Better yet, the festival runs for 32 days (July1-Aug1) and over 75% of the events are free!

The festival kicks off with a bang Opening Night on Tuesday, July 1 with the performance of up-and-coming country artists Sherrié Austin and Mountain Heart, whose cutting-edge acoustic music is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The free event begins at 7pm and is located right in the heart of Downtown Reno and the Riverwalk area at Wingfield Park.

kid original size!Artown’s array of events for families and kids begin bright and early July 2 with the free children’s educational series, Discover the Arts, which takes place each weekday throughout the month. The variety of activities within the series includes Discover Kidscape’s improvisation, where kids can learn the art of improvisation, Discover Kids music camp, a week-long music workshop of singing, making music, and exploring instruments, and Discover the Art of Magic, where children can learn magic tricks.

Say “bonjour” to a new event set to premiere during Artown in downtown Reno on July 13. Revolution on the River will debut from noon to 5pm along the banks of the Truckee River on Riverside Drive, featuring picnic baskets filled to the brim with locally sourced food and drink, as well as entertainment and a cake-decorating contest celebrating all things French for Bastille Day. The event is free to the public and attendees have the option of brining a picnic to enjoy or purchasing one of 250 French-themed picnic baskets that feature food and drink from Beaujolais Bistro, Dorinda’s Chocolates, Hub Coffee Roasters, Rounds Bakery, Mix Cupcakes, Wedge Cheese Shop, Common Cider Company and many other local businesses. Bon Appétit! You’ll be transported to the banks of the Seine River in Paris with a charming atmosphere full of French music, strolling models in period costume, a puppeteer entertaining families and friends of all ages, and painters creating artwork along the river.

July 12 of ArtTown is a day dedicated to the Visual Arts. The day is comprised of 14 visually-stimulating events that will draw you in. From 10am on, watch local artists create mural art downtown on the side of the Circus Circus, one of Reno’s famous hotels. Pick up a piece of local art at the annual yART sale, anytime from 9am-3pm. Experience Art Rocks, from 11am-3pm, for an open tour of quarry and how rocks are used in the arts.

concertMore into the musical arts? Then this year’s lineup of musical guests for Monday Night-Music Series in the park will be music to your ears.  The talent includes local composers, starting July 7 with an evening of jazz and blue classics by multi-instrumentalists Colin Ross and Mig O’hara, as well as July 21 for Reno Philharmonic’s Boston-Pops inspired program.  Also, check out Grammy nominated vocalist, composer, and arranger Perla Batalla July 14 and Michael Kaeshammer, Canadian pianist and vocalist July 28.

Celebrate Closing Night August 1 at 7:30pm with local favorite, Whitney Myer opening for Latin, Hip Hop and Rock Music seven piece band Ozomatli.
